Terms of Service

Effective July 17, 2026 · Operated by EaseAIworks ("RiskIndex", "we", "us"). These Terms are a binding agreement. By accessing riskindex.dev, the RiskIndex API, or any RiskIndex data (the "Service"), you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

Read this first — the short version

RiskIndex publishes statistical comparisons of geographic areas built from public government data. It is not a prediction, not professional advice, not a property inspection, and not a consumer report. A low score never means an area is safe, and a high score never means harm will occur. Never use RiskIndex as the basis for a decision about a specific person, property, or policy without independently verifying the underlying facts.

1. Definitions

"Content" means all scores, grades, percentiles, indicators, text, and other material made available through the Service. "Underlying Data" means third-party data (primarily U.S. and Canadian government datasets) that we ingest. "You" means the individual or entity using the Service.

2. Eligibility and authority

You must be at least 18 and able to form a binding contract. If you use the Service for an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization, and "you" includes it.

3. What the Service is — and is not

The Service aggregates publicly available government statistics and expresses them as relative, area-level comparisons (percentiles and letter grades) for general informational purposes only.

The Content is not, and must not be relied on as: insurance underwriting or pricing advice; legal, financial, investment, tax, accounting, medical, engineering, surveying, environmental, or real-estate advice; a property inspection, appraisal, survey, title search, or environmental site assessment; a safety certification; an emergency or evacuation resource; or a substitute for a qualified professional or the primary government source.

Scores are not predictions. They are statistical percentile ranks describing how an area compares to other areas on historical, modelled, or reported measures. They do not forecast whether any event will or will not occur at any location, and they say nothing about any specific property, structure, parcel, address, person, or household.

Area-level, not property-level. Content is computed at county, ZIP/ZCTA, census-tract, province, or metropolitan-area level. Conditions vary enormously within any such area. Applying an area figure to an individual property is an inference you make at your own risk.

4. Not a consumer reporting agency (FCRA and similar laws)

RiskIndex is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the U.S. Fair Credit Reporting Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq. ("FCRA"), and the Content is not a consumer report or an "investigative consumer report." We do not collect or provide information for the purpose of determining any individual's eligibility for anything.

You may not use the Service or the Content, in whole or in part, as a factor in establishing any individual's eligibility for: credit or insurance for personal, family or household purposes; employment; housing or tenancy; a government licence or benefit; or any other purpose regulated by the FCRA, by state or provincial analogues, by the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Fair Housing Act, or by comparable Canadian federal or provincial legislation. You are solely responsible for compliance with all laws applicable to your use, including fair-housing, fair-lending, anti-discrimination, insurance, and privacy laws.

5. Underlying Data and third-party sources

The Underlying Data originates with third parties — including FEMA, NHTSA, the FBI, the U.S. Census Bureau, EPA, CMS, CDC, HRSA, NOAA and Statistics Canada — and is republished under open-data terms with the transformations described on our Data Sources page. We do not create, control, audit, or independently verify the Underlying Data and are not responsible for it.

Government sources may revise, restate, delay, suspend, or withdraw their data at any time; agency participation in reporting programs (notably crime reporting) is voluntary and incomplete; and modelled estimates carry uncertainty that we do not quantify. Our copy is never more accurate or more current than its source.

No endorsement. Nothing in the Service implies that any government agency endorses, sponsors, certifies, or is affiliated with RiskIndex. Agency names are used solely to identify the origin of data.

6. Disclaimer of warranties

THE SERVICE AND ALL CONTENT ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE," WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, STATUTORY OR OTHERWISE. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, ACCURACY, COMPLETENESS, CURRENCY, QUIET ENJOYMENT, AND ANY WARRANTIES ARISING FROM COURSE OF DEALING OR USAGE OF TRADE.

WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE CONTENT IS ACCURATE, COMPLETE, CURRENT, RELIABLE OR ERROR-FREE, OR THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, TIMELY, OR FREE OF HARMFUL COMPONENTS. NO ADVICE OR INFORMATION, ORAL OR WRITTEN, OBTAINED FROM US CREATES ANY WARRANTY NOT EXPRESSLY STATED HERE. Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so parts of this section may not apply to you.

7. Independent verification and assumption of risk

Before relying on any figure for a decision with legal, financial, safety, or health consequences, you must verify it against the primary government source and obtain advice from a qualified professional. You assume all risk arising from your use of the Content, including any decision made or not made, or any action taken or not taken, in reliance on it. You are solely responsible for any conclusions you draw and for any output, product, or advice you derive from the Content.

8. Licence and acceptable use

Subject to these Terms and your plan, we grant you a limited, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable licence to access the Service and use the Content for your internal business or personal purposes. The free tier is licensed for evaluation and non-commercial use only; any commercial use requires a paid plan.

You may not: (a) resell, redistribute, sublicense, or make the Content available as a competing or substantially similar data product or feed; (b) use the Content to make, or to assist anyone in making, an adverse decision about an identifiable individual; (c) present scores as predictions, guarantees, certifications, or official government determinations; (d) share, resell, or publish API keys, or circumvent or attempt to circumvent rate limits, quotas, authentication, or other technical controls; (e) scrape, crawl, or bulk-extract the Service other than through the API within your plan limits; (f) reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive our scoring methodology or source code except to the extent this restriction is unenforceable by law; (g) remove or obscure attribution or disclaimers; (h) use the Service to harass, defame, discriminate, or in any unlawful manner; or (i) use the Service in violation of applicable export-control or sanctions laws.

Attribution. Where you display the Content publicly, you must attribute RiskIndex and reproduce the substance of the disclaimer in Section 3.

9. Intellectual property

The Underlying Data is public-domain or open-licensed and remains so. However, our selection, normalization, scoring methodology, weightings, compilation, presentation, trademarks, and the Service software are owned by us and protected by applicable law. No rights are granted except as expressly stated. Feedback you provide may be used by us without obligation or compensation.

10. Accounts, keys and security

API keys are personal to the registered email and must be kept confidential. You are responsible for all activity under your key, whether or not authorized by you. Notify us promptly of suspected compromise. We may revoke or suspend keys that violate these Terms, threaten the integrity or security of the Service, or appear compromised.

11. Fees, billing and taxes

Paid plans bill monthly in advance through Stripe and renew automatically until cancelled. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period; the key then reverts to the free tier. Fees are stated exclusive of taxes, which are added where applicable. Except where required by law, fees are non-refundable and we do not provide partial or pro-rata refunds. Quotas are hard caps: requests beyond your quota receive HTTP 429 rather than overage charges. We may change pricing, tiers, or limits on 30 days' notice for the following billing period.

12. Reporting an error in the data

If you believe a figure is wrong, email info@riskindex.dev with the location, field, and the primary source you relied on. Where a value came from a government source, the authoritative correction must be made at that source; we will refresh our copy once the source is corrected. This process is our sole obligation with respect to data accuracy, and is not an admission of liability.

13. Limitation of liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, NEITHER RISKINDEX NOR ITS OWNERS, OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS, SUPPLIERS OR LICENSORS WILL BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, EXEMPLARY, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, REVENUE, BUSINESS, GOODWILL, DATA, OR ANTICIPATED SAVINGS, OR FOR ANY PROPERTY DAMAGE, PERSONAL INJURY, OR DEATH, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE OR THE CONTENT, HOWEVER CAUSED AND ON ANY THEORY OF LIABILITY (CONTRACT, TORT INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE, STATUTE OR OTHERWISE), EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES AND EVEN IF A LIMITED REMEDY FAILS OF ITS ESSENTIAL PURPOSE.

OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE SERVICE WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (a) THE AMOUNTS YOU ACTUALLY PAID US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO THE CLAIM, OR (b) ONE HUNDRED U.S. DOLLARS (US$100).

Exclusive remedy. If you are dissatisfied with the Service or the Content, your sole and exclusive remedy is to stop using the Service and cancel your plan.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you; in that case our liability is limited to the greatest extent permitted by law. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

14. Indemnification

You will defend, indemnify and hold harmless RiskIndex and its owners, officers, employees and contractors from and against any claim, demand, proceeding, loss, liability, damage, penalty, cost or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or relating to: (a) your use of the Service or Content; (b) your breach of these Terms or of any law; (c) any decision you made or advice, product or output you provided to a third party based on the Content; or (d) your allegation that the Content is accurate, complete or fit for a particular purpose.

15. Time limit on claims

To the extent permitted by law, any claim arising out of or relating to the Service or these Terms must be commenced within one (1) year after the cause of action accrues, or it is permanently barred.

16. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your access at any time, with or without notice, if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or to protect the Service or other users. You may stop using the Service at any time. Sections 3–9 and 13–19 survive termination.

17. Changes to the Service and these Terms

The Service is provided on an evolving basis; we may add, change, suspend, or discontinue any part of it, including datasets, endpoints, scores, or methodology, at any time. We may update these Terms by posting a revised version with a new effective date; material changes will be reflected in that date. Your continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.

18. Force majeure

We are not liable for any delay or failure to perform caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including acts of God, natural disasters, war, terrorism, labour disputes, governmental action, changes to or withdrawal of third-party or government data, internet or utility failures, or failures of hosting, payment, or other third-party providers.

19. Governing law, venue and dispute resolution

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply. You and we submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in Ontario, Canada, and waive any objection to venue or forum non conveniens.

Class action waiver. To the maximum extent permitted by law, any dispute will be brought in your individual capacity only, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any purported class, collective, consolidated, or representative proceeding.

Before filing a claim, you agree to try to resolve the dispute informally by contacting info@riskindex.dev and allowing 30 days to reach a resolution.

20. Privacy

We collect your registered email address, API usage logs, and payment records processed by Stripe. We do not sell personal information. Card details are handled solely by Stripe and never stored by us. We use this information to operate the Service, enforce limits, bill you, and prevent abuse. You may request deletion of your account by emailing us; usage and billing records may be retained where required for legal, tax, or accounting purposes.

21. General

These Terms, together with any plan details and the Data Sources page, are the entire agreement between us and supersede prior discussions. If a provision is held unenforceable, it will be modified to the minimum extent necessary and the remainder stays in force. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our written consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets. There are no third-party beneficiaries. Headings are for convenience only. Notices to us: info@riskindex.dev.
